I promised a few weeks back that I would do more book reviews– I have been reading SO much lately. Ben and I started a new “plan” a few weeks ago- we only watch TV after the kids are in bed on the weekends. The other nights, we read. It’s amazing how much time that frees up for reading!
Oh goodness please get your tissues ready before you start this book: The Hardest Peace. Written by Kara Tippets, the blogger behind A Mundane Faithfulness, about her battle with breast cancer. She had 4 small children and was very young when she was diagnosed and so much of her story reflected my own that it was very humbling.
Reading about her countless doctor’s appointments, procedures, medications, and bad days gave me reflection on enjoying our days. It sounds trite, but really, not one of us is promised tomorrow.
One HUGE take away from the book was her admonition (taken from scripture of course) that Love is Kind. I sometimes have trouble with being patient with my family and something about those three words embedded themselves in my soul. I found myself for weeks afterwards saying in my mind over and over again. “Love is Kind.”
A child drops and breaks a dish? Love’s response should be kind.
Husband inadvertently says something that upsets me? Don’t fly off the handle- love is kind.
I’m getting interrupted while working on my blog for the umpteenth time in half an hour? Love is kind, kind, kind.
I’ve by no means got this down perfectly and never will, but just having this mantra in my head has really helped me be kinder. I also taught it to my children and we say it together when one (or all) of us is having a hard time!
Kara’s writing style is like she’s sitting beside you talking friend-to-friend telling you about her days, whether good or bad. It felt so encouraging to read from someone who loved well. (Kara passed away in March of this year. She still has one book that will be published posthumously.)
After mulling over the words “Love is Kind” I decided to make a printable to hang up to remind me all day long. I wanted to share it with you, too! Click here to be taken to the printable. Just “right click” to save on your computer or print it right away. And don’t forget to check out Kara’s book if you haven’t already.
