I remember I was little, my mom would have us memorize Bible verses on the way to elementary school. She would have us repeat the verses after her over and over until we knew them! It’s those very verses that are still seared permanently into my memory, and that’s why I want to teach my children to memorize scripture while they’re young! I came up with the idea of a Summer Scripture Memory Series last year, but never followed through with it. So I’m going forward this year and would love to have you join me!
I’ll be using verses from the Child Training Bible, but you don’t have to have it to participate. (Although I know you’ll love it!) I’ll just take a verse from the chart, and I’ll also spend time with my children reading other verses that pertain to that particular characteristic during the week. I’ll also try to incorporate an activity each week to help with the memorization.
This week’s verse is about the importance of forgiveness (under the “unforgiveness” tab on the CTB) in our lives. Print out the sheet below, and hang it in a place you’ll see often throughout the day.
I cannot emphasize enough how unforgiveness can take a hold of someone’s lives. I’ve seen it in people close to me, and it can flat out ruin a relationship. If we’ve tasted the forgiveness of Christ, we should be eager to extend that same forgiveness to others! (And no, it is most certainly not always easy.)
Explain to your children that not forgiving someone who has offended him or her will draw them further away from God. Print out and use the activity sheet below to help them memorize the verse- a fill-in-the-blank and questions for you to ask them.
Oh, and we adults don’t get a free pass on the memorizing! Even though it might be easier for kiddos, we can still do it! Your kids will love doing this with you.
Great starting verse! A free pass for me on the memorization! When my children were young, we taught them this verse and made it our family verse. Whenever there were arguments or problems, this was they verse we quoted and, often, they one they had to do for copywork if that was part of the training. They are now 23, 21, and 19, but they can quote that verse without thinking about it! 😉
Looking forward to the rest of the verses. My children may be grown, but it never hurts to have more of the Word hidden in my heart!
