Ben and I recently (as in today!) started the Whole 30 eating plan. A friend of mine did it a while back and she’s doing it, too. We got together yesterday to pre-cook some food so it wouldn’t be quite so hard. If you haven’t heard of Whole 30, you basically eat only these foods: veggies (and lots of them); fruits in moderation; meat and nuts and seeds. (you can read more here) Not.even.cheese. Y’all, I have never done a diet that didn’t include cheese, and I’ve done lots of them!
Anyway, this is only for 30 days to “reset” my body and get rid of toxins. It won’t be easy- my sister is coming into town this weekend and I’m going to a blog conference in a few weeks, but I’m determined to make it work!
This afternoon I was already craving something sweet, and no sugar, honey, or even maple syrup is allowed on Whole 30. (It’s only 30 days, I keep telling myself!) Anyway, I did a little browsing on Pinterest and decided to combine two recipes into something yummy: Whole 30 Chocolate Ice Cream. You may be wondering how one acquires ice cream with no dairy. It’s actually quite simple- a frozen banana!
Now I’m not claiming this stuff tastes like Blue Bell (this is an honest blog, after all) but it was incredibly yummy! And easy! I made it in my beloved food processor in about 2 minutes. (Doing a Whole 30? You NEED a food processor. Click to see the one I use.) I just have to remember to keep frozen bananas on hand! It should look about like this when it’s ready:
Mmm… this makes me wish I’d made more! Bon apetit!
Recipe:
recipes
2 frozen bananas
1.5 tbs pure cocoa
1/3 cup almond or coconut milk
1-2 tbs. almonds or sunflower seeds, optional (for added protein)
Put all ingredients into your food processor and blend until very smooth, about 2 minutes on low. Scrape down sides and blend in 30 second increments, if needed.
If you’ve done Whole 30 and have any recipes to share, please do so! This is SO new to me!
Is there a good substitution for bananas? I am allergic. I have heard of using cannellini beans in smoothies. Wonder if freezing them would work. Has anyone tried something other than bananas? Thanks
Coconut milk
I am having trouble finding the actual recipe. I see bananas, but what else did you add?
Techinally this form of “nice cream” isn’t allowed on WHOLE30. They frown upon SWYPO type foods.
You are very right. I created the recipe before reading the book (oops) and need to update my photos.
I would be hesitant to classify this as a “Whole 30” recipe, as I believe the program would call it “Sex with your Pants On” (SWYPO). It’s a dessert (which is a no-no) that is *technically* made with approved ingredients, but still a dessert at the end of the day. More about SWYPO here: http://whole30.com/2011/10/sex-with-your-pants-on/. That being said, this looks DELICIOUS, and I can’t wait to try it once my Whole 30 is over 🙂 I’m on Day 8 of my 2nd Whole 30.

Good luck on your second round! And hope you get to enjoy the ice cream post-whole 30. 🙂
OMG, I just made this! I have finished 2 whole 30’s and mainly eat paleo. Once the banana mixture was smooth I put it in my ice cream maker to get it to a thicker consistency. Then I added about 1/4 cup of fresh raspberries from my garden and some cocoa nibs. Pure deliciousness! Thank you
