Welcome to Day 3 of Making Small Changes! I can already tell it’s going to be a challenging week- change is HARD, right?
Anyway, so far we’ve talked about making changes in rushing and our blogs.
Today, I wanted to talk about food. I really, really like food. I like creating it and eating it! This past month, my husband and I embarked on something we’ve never done before, the Whole 30 diet. If you haven’t read about, it’s basically a stricter version of Paleo- yes, that exists- that lasts 30 days. We’re basically eating unprocessed meat, veggies, fruit, nuts and eggs.
We’re currently on day 23 and all I can say is “Wow.” I never realized how much junk we constantly ate. Even when I was counting carbs, or counting calories, I downed Dr. Pepper 10 as my “treat.” On this diet, there’s nothing artificial allowed, so that was out. (And let’s not even talk about the lack of cheese in this diet!)
It’s been a completely different way of grocery shopping, preparation, cooking, and even thinking about food. We’re undecided as of yet what we’ll do at the end of the 30 days, but we’re leaning towards following the same diet 6 days a week and enjoying other foods on the 7th day. Sounds pretty reasonable to me. 🙂

You’re not supposed to weigh the entire 30 days, and for the first 15 or so we had the scale stashed in our closet. I finally snuck it out one day, and since then we’ve been weighing. I’ve lost 8 pounds so far and my husband has lost about the same. It’s crazy!
We’ve found several new recipes that we love and I thought I’d share one today that my husband actually made up! Before this “diet” he would have sniffed at the thought of turkey meat, but we’ve found ways to make it a little more tasty.
These paleo turkey meatballs were really delicious. We served them with a side of potatoes roasted with avocado oil, salt and rosemary. The kids loved it, too! And they were so easy- at least Ben says so.
- 1.5 pounds ground turkey
- ½ cup tapioca flour
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp. salt
- 2 tsp. garlic
- 1 small yellow onion, minced
- 2 tsp. Italian seasoning
- Mix all ingredients well with your hands.
- Shape into golfball-sized balls.
- Bake at 350 for 45 minutes, or until internal temperature reaches 165 degrees.
What’s one small change you could make in your eating habits? Giving up soda for a while? Cutting back on refined sugar? Simply adding more veggies?
That’s awesome! We are transitioning to the paleo diet…which is not exciting because I LOVE cheese. But, sometimes things like that have to be given up to gain better things in life. I’ll have to try this recipe!
