The Stinky Truth- Diapers Aren’t Cheap!

  • {The owner of the cutest diapered-bottom! And I promise, she does own clothes!}

If you have a little one running {or crawling, or lying} around, you know that the cost of diapers can eat your lunch! And if you don’t have a baby yet, stay tuned for some tips for the future!

I know how easy it is to run into the store and grab the first package of diapers I see. But as my sweet, patient husband will tell you, I very, very rarely do that. Most diaper-buying experiences require the use of coupons, a calculator, and a few minutes trying to contain children in the buggy.

But the truth is, your baby will be in diapers for 2 years, give or take. And the time you take to figure out the cheapest option each time will be time well spent.

Here are a few example scenarios:
Up and Up Diapers (Target’s Brand) run about $6 for a package of 35- size 2 diapers.
The same size Huggies brand is more like $8. But, sometimes you can find a Target coupon for $2 off Huggies, and stack this with a $2 Huggies manufacturer coupon. This takes $4 off the total, bringing it down to $4. So the Huggies are actually cheaper in this scenario.

Take the same scenario- and let’s see the difference in cost-per-diaper, or what we’ll call CPD for kicks.
If each package had 35 diapers, the Huggies would be 11 cents each, while the Up and Up would be 17 cents each. Now 6 cents is definitely not a huge amount, but let’s do the math. The baby will probably go through at least 6 diapers a day. That’s 36 cents a day, roughly $131 a year, or $262 over the two years!

Now I’m not here to knock any particular brand. Sometimes no coupons are available- or worth using- but the point is to try to figure it out each time. Up and Up is actually a very good bargain when you haven’t had time to search for coupons, etc.

We use all different kinds of diapers here {which I know isn’t possible for all babies if they have skin sensitivities} and I just try to get the best deal each time.

Amazon also sells diapers, and with their Subscribe and Save feature, you can get free shipping plus 15% off their regular price. So the diapers below would actually be $32.29, with free shipping. This comes to 15 cents per diaper. This would be a great option if it is hard for you to get to the store.

The best way we have saved money on diapers? Diaper showers! With each baby, I had more than one shower and when the hostesses asked what I wanted- I humbly asked for a diaper shower. And diapers we got! With my first 2, I didn’t buy diapers for 5 or 6 months. Evaleigh is almost 9 months old and I have only bought a package or 2- only because I had run out of the size she needed. Praise God!
