married… with children {our anniversary!}

Guess what? To put it mildly, life after children is a LOT different than BC (before children.)
Our anniversary is today and instead of heading out for our date in a few minutes like we were supposed to be, we’re not even in the same building! I am home with three children while Ben is taking Landon to the doctor.

And you know what? I’m totally fine with it. I’m pretty worn out from the multiple Christmas trips- my family/Ben’s family/a family trip to Galveston- all done with one or more sick children. Oh, and a 5 week old who is up frequently at night and I’m still recovering from my C-section. So a nice day at home with nothing to do (except oh, you know, folding the 7 loads of laundry I’ve been ignoring!) all day except rest and hopefully get everyone WELL sounds like just what the doctor ordered!

And a few things I’ve learned about marriage along the way:
1.) Men cannot find lost (or even “not lost”) items. Ever. It’s okay. Your man is just like the other 3 billion on the planet- help him find it and move on. He’ll think you’re awesome.

(Yes I have to remind myself of this approximately 1000 times a day, as I now have a husband, a 7 year old son, and a baby son who will soon be able to not find things ever!)
PS I have confirmed this fact with at least ten other women. Massive research panel!

2.) A little alone time with him (guess it’s not technically alone!) every day is important, if possible. Dates may not be possible at some points in your marriage, and that’s okay! But take a few minutes to unwind together and talk about your day. We do this after the kids are in bed and I look forward to it every day!
(if your hubby is away often, try to Skype! My cousin is stationed in Germany and his sweet wife often stays up until 2 a.m. to talk to him!)

3.) Travel as much as time/your budget allows, both before and after children. Naturally, it will be easier to pick up and go before you have children, whether you want to go with or without them. If you want to take them, you pretty much have to pack your entire house; if you want to go on an “alone” trip, you have to find childcare, and still pack up your entire house to send with them. 
So if you can, travel a lot before the little ones come along, but also enjoy trips with them as well! Some of our best memories are from our trip to The Carolinas- we drove there in 2011 when we “only” had 3 kids. 🙂

    Happy Anniversary!! I’m not sure if I posted on your last family picture but your kiddos are adorable! What a beautiful family you both have.
    I learned early on to let it go. Say what needs to be said and be done with it.
