Book Review: MOMumental & GIVEAWAY!:)

I recently decided that since being a wife, along with “mothering” are my jobs at the moment, I should read and study as much as I can about these areas- just as I would do for any other job. I want to be the best wife and mama I can to the precious family I have been given, and learning from the Bible and others who have walked this path is so beneficial.

I was recently given the opportunity to review Jennifer Grant’s new book MOMumental, which obviously falls in the “mommy” category of my life. At first I wasn’t sure what to think of the book because most of it is comprised of stories of her parenting, but then I realized that sometimes this is the best way to learn- see what works for others and what doesn’t, with very specific examples.

There is so much pressure to be a perfect mom these days, and while I do want to do my very best- guess what- I am going to mess up! The main thing I loved from Jennifer’s book is “what matters is what you do most of the time.” (which is a phrase actually coined by her young-at-the-time son). For me to actually memorize a phrase from a book (pregnant brain, anyone?) and it to come up in my mind several times a day means that the book really did have an effect on me!

I also really enjoyed Jennifer’s chapter sub-titled “Adventures in Mistaking Kids for Mini-Adults.” Even though I knew this, it really helped reemphasize to that kids are kids! They will do very childish things- sometimes at the most inappropriate times! But their minds are not fully developed and they don’t always make rational decisions! (ha- neither do I!)

One story from our own life is when we were at a garden center several years back. Ben and I were browsing the trees, and looked up and one of our children was squatted down in the middle of the rows of trees using the bathroom! My initial reaction was to be upset, but then I just had to laugh. The child was potty training, so why not go when the urge hit?

As a fun bonus, one of my lucky readers gets to win a copy of MOMumental! The publisher was sweet enough to send an additional copy to me- so the copy you receive won’t be covered in Cheetos or kids’ slobber. Not that mine is. Ahem.
