This time 2 years ago, our family was suffering through a pretty rough time. We had just lost my grandpa, my grandmother was dying, I was suffering post-partum depression, and to top it all off, our dog Harvey that we’d had for 12 years was dying.
The day after Mother’s Day of 2013, Harvey did die. We had to put him down and that is not a decision I wish on anyone. It was the right decision, however, but we still miss him. He was there when we brought each of our four babies home from the hospital, he gave us a sense of security when we moved to Houston, and he was just an overall great dog.
We knew that we wanted to get a new dog right away for the kids’ sake so my husband immediately began searching shelters in the area. He took the older two kids to visit a few and even though this one wasn’t on his list, she worked his way into his heart before he left. He and the kids took her out to play for a few minutes and when they got ready to go, she jumped up in the stroller and wanted to come home with them!
She really helped our family heal in so many ways. No, she didn’t take away the loss of my grandparents or our previous dog Harvey, but she provided something fun to focus on and brought a sense of newness and starting over.
Just the other day, she prevented our daughter and her friend from stepping on a massive snake in our backyard by barking incessantly at the snake! Shudder!
[caption id="attachment_2771" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Harley helps the kids at school![/caption]My daughter Allie especially loves spoiling her and loves to give her treats. Just about every time we’re in the store she wants to buy some for her. She really is part of our family so sometimes we do like to give her a little extra treat!
The last time I was in Wal-Mart, I picked up a few new products- by Grillers and Sizzlers by Nudges®. My younger daughter commented that it looked like “food we cook for humans.” And it was an accurate observation! These high-quality treats are made in the USA and meat is their main ingredient. (I’m wondering what the main ingredient is in other treats? Hmmm.) Wal-Mart also had Nudges® jerky in a new value-sized 36 oz. package.
Harley takes good care of us, so we like to take good care of her. Our kids love giving her treats, and we love that they aren’t full of artificial junk.
