New Years’ Challenge: The Year of Thrift Store Shopping

thrift store

So a few days back on Facebook, one of my friends mentioned she’d like to try shopping at Sam’s all year for her clothing, just to see if she could do it. It reminded me that I’d had the idea to do the same thing with Goodwill so we started “talking” back and forth in the comments. My friend Nikki chimed in and said that if I would do the Goodwill challenge, she would, too! So what started off as “I thought about this” is now “we’re doing this!”

Nikki and I at her wedding in 2012. We did not get our dresses at thrift stores! 🙂

So we refined our ideas a little bit and here are our simple self-imposed rules for the year:

All clothes must be bought at any second-hand or thrift store.

Except: Undergarments. Ewww. And possibly shoes. Depends on how the insides look.

One “splurge” outfit. Just in case. You know, just in case I get invited to speak at the White House or something. I might need a little leeway there!

So there you have it! I’ve already dipped my toes a bit in the pool of thrift-store shopping. Here’s one of my outfits:

Love this purse I got at Goodwill for around $6.

My heart is beating fast as I type this- I’m getting nervous about this challenge! But I’m so glad to have a friend along with me and it will be fun. Right? Right?

So come join us if you like! We’ll be posting pics of our outfits along the way, and maybe you’ll be challenged too!

  1. You look amazing, great outfit. Hugs, Marty

  2. I’m IN!!! This is such a fun challenge 🙂

  3. I remember when thrift store shopping was considered other than fashionable. I love to go to Goodwill. I find some of the BEST deals there! I never thought of looking for formal wear there but I’m going to. My girlfriend is getting married this year and, as much as I love her, I don’t want to pay $200 for a dress I’ll probably only wear this once. Thanks for the tips!

    • The Goodwill in CT is 50% off the entire store on the 4th of July…..just mentioning this as there were TONS of prom dresses and formal wear there in 2012. I bought a velvet gown and wore it on a cruise for the formal nights.

  4. Wonderful! I would join you but I’m actually looking forward to us having a bit more money and being able to buy some new clothes. I’d like to check at thrift stores first, though!

One place you should know about Young and Restless, a children’s clothes and things resale shop. It is a little far from you, on the NW side of the Heights, but if you happened to be in the area you might find some things you like. https://www.facebook.com/ynrboutiquedotcom

  5. I love thrift shopping for clothes. I occasionally buy new if there is a great sale or I can’t find an item. I would like to add another exception to the challenge and that would be bathing suits.

  6. What an awesome challenge!!! I can’t wait to see what great deals you find! 🙂

  7. so does this mean only what u buy is from thrift stores or EVERYTHING YOU WEAR is from thrift stores. hmm. that could get tricky. looking forward to seeing how the challenge goes. thanks for linking up to the all things pretty party.

  8. Love thrift store shopping! Especially because where I am you can get stuff cheap. Where my parents are you can buy stuff on clearance at Kohls or Ross or where ever for just as cheap.

  9. I have purchased 99.9% of my family’s clothing for the last 3 years at thrift stores. My kids love what I find and my husband thrifts with me now. I have an amazing cashmere sweater collection that has all been thrifted. The best part is that when the closets need cleaning and clothes are outgrown I donate them and receive a tax write off for….you guessed it, the same amount that I purchased the clothing for. It’s a win win. Good luck!

  10. Hi Kelli, you are going to LOVE this challenge. I’ve been shopping primarily at thrifts for the last 2 years and it is so much fun. I dress myself, my hubby and 3 boys, ages 8, 12 and almost 15 mostly from the thrift stores and garage sales. You will be surprised at the awesome things you can find.

I get more compliments now at how nice I look and what great clothes I have than ever before. Now I look better and spend barely anything on clothes. Good luck!!
