Since adding our fifth kid to the mix last year (you can read more about that here) I have become ALL about the efficiency. It’s not like our family wasn’t big before, but it seems like going from 4 to 5 has been our most difficult adjustment yet. Lots of things have become much more simplified and that’s a good thing!
If you’re wondering how to make things run more smoothly and actually have time to enjoy your life, here are a few things we’ve discovered that have helped us.
1.) Simplify your wardrobe
This has made a HUGE difference for me. This summer, I’ve pretty much worn the same 3-4 shirts and 3 pair of shorts, plus a few summer dresses thrown in. My feet have been inside exactly 3 pairs of shoes (sandals, flip flops, and workout shoes) minus a very few occasions such as a wedding. And you know what? I LOVE IT! No one cares they seem me in the same clothes, it’s clothes I like and feel confident in, and it makes getting dressed in the morning so easy.
(In all honestly, getting rid of half the stuff, including clothes, in our house is not a bad idea. Too much stuff = chaos)
2.) Simplify your meals
Like getting dressed, eating is one of those things that is done every.single.day, but of course it’s multiple times a day! I figured out that I am responsible for 147 meals each week (7 people x 3 times a day x 7 days). That is a LOT of food, people!
I’ve also started working out again and needing lots more protein. I don’t always have time to make a huge breakfast so when I found Jimmy Dean Premium Bowls in the frozen section at H-E-B, I had to try some. They have been SO helpful in getting both carbs and protein after a hard workout. Each one contains 21-23 grams of protein, but the best part is that they are SO good! There are three kinds- Breakfast Burrito, Loaded Potato, and Ranchero Steak and Eggs. My son requested that we have them every day. 😉
3.) Get as many things delivered as possible
That’s my new mantra. I LOVE ordering things online to be delivered, but ordering groceries to be picked up is a life changer. H-E-B Curbside Pickup is a brilliant example of this timesaver. Order what you want, pull up, and your groceries are magically waiting for you. See? Brilliant.
4.) Teach your kids to help
Y’all. My older two have been SUCH a help these last several months with helping with the younger ones, cleaning, and even cooking complete meals. My 10 year old can clean the bathroom as well as (even better?!) than me and get dinner on the table from start to finish but guess what? She wasn’t born knowing how to do either of those. It’s taken several years of training and her watching and helping me. That part takes patience, but trust me it is so worth it! Your kids need to leave your nest as responsible adults, so start them early!
I’m still figuring it out, but I feel like I’m slowly finding things that work for our family. What are your favorite ways to save time? This mama can use all the help she can get!
