(Be sure to read to the end for the bonus from Young Living Essential Oils!) Two weeks ago on Wednesday, my 11 year old son Landon spiked a high fever and went to bed. As in, he was playing basketball outside one minute then voluntarily lying down the next. For most of my kids, this wouldn’t worry me, but for Landon, we have reason to worry a little more.
If you’ve read my blog for long, you know my son has biliary atresia, a pediatric liver disease. He was born with it and had surgery at 7 weeks old. (You can read about that here.) We spent some time on the phone with various doctors the next day- he was 24 hours in and running a steady 102 temperature. He had not left the bed except to use the restroom. Ben and I were really worried by then because still, the rest of the family had zero symptoms of illness so we assumed it was nothing contagious.
Imagine my surprise the next morning when the nurse took one look at him and said, “I think he has the flu.” I didn’t think there was any way that was possible- he wasn’t throwing up, wasn’t coughing, no symptoms besides fever and headache. She swabbed him and less than 10 minutes later came back- it’s Flu A!
I texted my husband and others who had been praying and said, “Thank God it’s the flu!”Now that may sound crazy to you, but even thought the flu is never ideal, it’s MUCH better than something bad going on with his liver. We went ahead and did the labs and they were perfect. We were so thankful.
Now, for the rest of the story. As soon as Landon got fever, I began rubbing him down with essential oils (thieves + peppermint) and diffusing them in my room where he was staying quarantined from the other kids. I’d been dabbling in using them for almost a year but wasn’t real sure of their efficacy. I mean, come on, it’s oil. What can it do? Well, let me tell you what it did.
Landon only ended up being sick two and a half days. With the flu.
(by the time we made it to the doctor that Friday morning, he had no fever. Of course!) The doctor warned us he would be sick at least 5-7 days. She suggested we give him Tamiflu. I LOVE our doctor but just didn’t have peace about giving him the Tamiflu. I decided to keep using the oils since his fever was already down. By Friday afternoon, he was eating normally and playing a little bit of basketball. He did take a nap that afternoon and a nap on Saturday, but other than that, he was past the worst!
